In the absence of further correspondence on the
point it has been assumed that the claim was met.
Arising out of a question in the House of Commons Sir
J. Jordan was requested in a despatch of July 1, 1914 to
report the result of his representations on this case but,
presumably owing to the amount of work consequent upon the
outbreak of war, no report has been submitted.
There has been considerable correspondence since 1924
concerning piracy in Chinese waters but I can see no
reference to any claims for compensation having been put
forward. I gather, however, that mall claims in respect of
loss and damage are occasionally put forward by British
Consuls to the local authorities without reference to this
department.
